Sustainability

PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) is both biobased and biodegradable. It can help you to reduce your carbon footprint and can be disposed of in various ways. So why not make the switch to PLA bioplastics?

Our principle bioplastic – PLA – is not only made from renewable feedstocks, but it also uses less non-renewable energy in production than oil based plastics like polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS). In fact, a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) for a typical PP or PS plastic reveals CO2 emissions four times higher than those for PLA.

PLA sustainability: More efficient use of biomass

To make 1 kg of PLA requires just 1.6 kg of carbohydrate biomass. Other types of bioplastics need up to three times more natural resources to produce the same amount of end-product.

Bioplastics biomass: Food v fuel

So how much arable land is used for bioplastics production?  According to the European Bioplastics Association and the IfBB**, in 2018, 0.02% of our planet's farmable land will be used for the production of bioplastics biomass: The equivalent of a cherry tomato next to the Eiffel tower…

PLA offers multiple end-of-life options

Product designers can already have an end in mind when they start working with PLA. Options include take-back schemes for material re-use, recycling, or (industrial) composting.

We also offer Luminy PLA resins based on GMO-free feedstocks.
