The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals that define the 2030 development agenda of the United Nations. Global demand for Omega-3s is growing in human and animal nutrition. Although in nature, marine microalgae are at the base of the food chain and the original source of omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil has traditionally been the source most commonly used. As the availability from wild-caught fish is reaching its limit, an alternative to fish oil and derivates produced from forage fish, as AlgaPrime™ DHA, is a vital innovation to help reduce pressure on global marine resources.
In our efforts to advance feed and food with sustainable nutrition and meet today and tomorrow's challenges, we designed our production facilities to deliver an advanced level of sustainability in creating microalgae-based Omega-3s, offering low carbon water and land-use impacts.
To make AlgaPrime™ DHA, microalgae are grown in closed fermentation tanks where they transform renewable, sustainable, plant-based sugars into algae containing omega-3-rich oil in a matter of days.
Sugarcane is the fuel for our AlgaPrime™ DHA production. Why does that matter? Compared to other sugars sources such as corn and wheat, the sugar cane used to grow AlgaPrime™ DHA it's one of the world's most productive sugar sources, resulting in practical innovation that is sustainable, affordable, and at scale.
The more sugar produced per hectare, the more Omega-3s can be made per hectare of land. The energy to power our algae fermentation facility and the sugar mill next door also comes from that same hectare of land through the waste sugarcane, called bagasse.
Moreover, the bagasse is used as a renewable source of energy that fully powers the sugar mill and our algae facility.
To safeguard the positive environmental and social impact of AlgaPrime™ DHA, we work continuously to ensure that our raw materials are sourced responsibly. Our algae fermentation production is located in the São Paulo State of Brazil, Brazil's central sugar cane production area.
The sugarcane that supplies our production is sourced within a 30 km radius of our facility. We relay in 20-years analyzes using satellite images of the area that show zero deforestation.1
A significant highlight is that the production facility is located more than 2,500 km away from the Amazon rainforest.

We have completed a full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the AlgaPrime™ DHA portfolio which demonstrated that Omega-3s from AlgaPrime™ DHA have lower carbon footprint compared to traditional Omega-3s sources of fish oil.
