Discover plant-based Omega-3 derived from algae

We are committed to united nations sustainable development goals

While the world's population is growing, the resources left to serve it are diminishing. For the sake of the planet's future, we need to shift gears. We support our customers in finding new ways of operating for sustainable growth, reducing the pressure on marine natural resources and our planet's natural boundaries.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals that define the 2030 development agenda of the United Nations. They are an international call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The SDGs challenge companies to align their goals with the international community, which holds enormous potential for positive change.

We selected three SDGs to focus on and set targets for each of them:

1 by quantity; 2 verified through Bonsucro certification or independent audit vs Corbion cane sugar code; 3 for key agricultural raw materials, verified through satelllite data (GRAS), RSPO certification; 4 Scope I, II and Scope III emissions of key raw materials and transport; 5 Life Cycle Assessment; 6 Product Social Metrics; 7 approved by Science Based Targets initiative

We believe in algae and the power of fermentation to address the sustainability and nutritional challenges of today and tomorrow.

We're the first and only company to use industrial-scale fermentation to create algae ingredients for sustainable nutrition.

Our AlgaPrime™ DHA is the world's leading sustainable source of Omega-3 ingredients based on microalgae fermentation that deliver sustainable nutrition for feed and food. With AlgaPrime™ DHA, we support our customers in advancing feed and food while meeting rising Omega-3 demand and reducing pressure on the oceans to provide this critical nutrient.

Protecting the oceans

Global demand for Omega-3s is growing in human and animal nutrition. Although in nature, marine microalgae are at the base of the food chain and the original source of omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil has traditionally been the source most commonly used. As the availability from wild-caught fish is reaching its limit, an alternative to fish oil and derivates produced from forage fish, as AlgaPrime™ DHA, is a vital innovation to help reduce pressure on global marine resources.

Sustainable production

In our efforts to advance feed and food with sustainable nutrition and meet today and tomorrow's challenges, we designed our production facilities to deliver an advanced level of sustainability in creating microalgae-based Omega-3s, offering low carbon water and land-use impacts.

To make AlgaPrime™ DHA, microalgae are grown in closed fermentation tanks where they transform renewable, sustainable, plant-based sugars into algae containing omega-3-rich oil in a matter of days.

Sugarcane is our feedstock and fuel

Sugarcane is the fuel for our AlgaPrime™ DHA production. Why does that matter? Compared to other sugars sources such as corn and wheat, the sugar cane used to grow AlgaPrime™ DHA it's one of the world's most productive sugar sources, resulting in practical innovation that is sustainable, affordable, and at scale.

The more sugar produced per hectare, the more Omega-3s can be made per hectare of land. The energy to power our algae fermentation facility and the sugar mill next door also comes from that same hectare of land through the waste sugarcane, called bagasse.

Moreover, the bagasse is used as a renewable source of energy that fully powers the sugar mill and our algae facility.

Responsible sourcing and zero deforestation

To safeguard the positive environmental and social impact of AlgaPrime™ DHA, we work continuously to ensure that our raw materials are sourced responsibly. Our algae fermentation production is located in the São Paulo State of Brazil, Brazil's central sugar cane production area.

The sugarcane that supplies our production is sourced within a 30 km radius of our facility. We relay in 20-years analyzes using satellite images of the area that show zero deforestation.1

A significant highlight is that the production facility is located more than 2,500 km away from the Amazon rainforest.

We have completed a full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the AlgaPrime™ DHA portfolio which demonstrated that Omega-3s from AlgaPrime™ DHA have lower carbon footprint compared to traditional Omega-3s sources of fish oil.

Our Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is ISO 14040/44-complaint and was peer reviewed and accepted for scientific publication in Algal Research on September 15, 2021. For more information about our LCA click here
