It is also vital to the communities in which we operate and to our planet's resources. We recognize that intensive agriculture can have negative consequences for people and the environment. The agricultural sector is the second-largest source of GHG emissions globally and farming of sugarcane and oil palm has been linked to issues such as forced and child labor.
While Corbion is not directly involved with the growing, harvesting, and processing of the crops used to make our raw materials, we have partnered with our direct suppliers, conservation solution providers and engage with other stakeholders involved in our agricultural supply chains to promote our vision for sustainable agriculture.
Corbion’s sustainable agriculture approach is guided by our Sustainable Agriculture Policy, which outlines principles related to biodiversity protection, deforestation prevention, stewardship of air, soil, and water, climate resilience, and responsible agricultural practices. Corbion’s Cane Sugar Policy defines requirements for responsible cane sugar sourcing and aligns with the principles established by Bonsucro for sustainable sugarcane production. As cane sugar is Corbion’s most significant agricultural raw material, supplier engagement, verification, and continuous improvement activities are strongly focused in this area. Corbion also maintains sourcing expectations for other agricultural raw materials where relevant, including palm oil-derived materials. For palm, our approach is aligned with the responsible sourcing principles of no deforestation, no peatland, and no exploitation (NDPE). We support relevant certification and verification schemes across our agricultural supply chains. For cane sugar, we utilize Bonsucro certification and conduct supplier assessments against the Corbion Cane Sugar Code where Bonsucro-certified supply is not yet available. For palm oil-derived ingredients, we implement the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) supply chain standard where applicable.
Further details of our sustainability policies and commitments can be found on our website under Statements, codes and policies.
Impact on the ground
Sustainable agriculture has the potential to protect the planet, enhance the economic viability of the agricultural sector, and support the livelihoods and well-being of farmers and the communities they work in. We are collaborating with our suppliers and other partners to implement sustainable agriculture practices to drive ecosystem improvements in our sourcing areas.
Our efforts to advance responsible sourcing, reduce GHG emissions in the value chain, and strengthen agricultural resilience are described in more detail in the Sustainability performance section of our Annual Report 2025.
